Destination Addiction: The Killer of Happiness

Beware of Destination Addiction: a preoccupation with the idea that happiness is in the next place, the next job, and with the next partner. Until you give up the idea that happiness is somewhere else, it will never be where you are.

The moment I saw this quote, it resonated with me. It’s something we all face. It’s the need to get somewhere – that doesn’t necessarily exist – in order to feel fulfilled. To feel “happy.”

As I read this, such an overwhelming feeling of awareness mixed with frustration took over me. I felt aware and confident in this truth; I knew it was the way that my heart was meant to be – happy in every waking moment. But I was also frustrated because I would catch myself on a daily-basis thinking “if I do this, I’ll definitely be happier.”

And that’s the mess we get ourselves into. Waiting for something – or someone – to cure our unhappiness. It just isn’t real. I’ve become more aware of this through searching for answers; for example, I’ve been reading Spirit Junkie, an amazing book by Gabrielle Bernstein which focuses on enlightening her readers that all of the happiness they seek in the universe already resides inside of themselves. Pretty wild, right? How can all the happiness you need be inside of you? Without the money, the power, the love, and the achievements?

That’s exactly it. All of those things don’t take you to the true destination – the enlightenment of happiness. Happiness is breathing in air, looking at your surroundings, listening to the earths sounds, and feeling your feet roll off the ground as you walk. It’s recognizing that you’re simply alive. All of the other “wants” are just fillers. Fillers to create a thought pattern that “says” you’re happy. I believe that happiness is attained through simple luxuries of life: heartfelt conversations, a hug from your mother or father, and the moments where you realize that your health is the priority and, in return, you feel thankful.

On that note, I’d like to share another find in my research for correcting my thought processes: The concept of Mindfulness. In a nutshell, the Buddha advocated that a person should establish mindfulness in one’s day-to-day life; maintaining, as much as possible, a calm awareness of one’s body, feelings and mind. This is all interconnected with the concepts in Spirit Junkie. Be aware of yourself and happiness will appear – fully and truly.

It may sound to you like a bunch of hippie mumbo-jumbo at first. I know, because at first, it did to me too. But when I opened my heart and my mind to these concepts, I started to see all of the blocks I had created. I limited myself from happiness because I REALLY thought it was somewhere else. I thought that the perfect relationship would save me, or getting my dream job was going to take me to the perfect state of mind.

By meditating and prayer, I ran into many parts of my self that I was angry at – and then I broke those blocks by creating awareness to them. Breaking this negative thought pattern is a daily struggle, but I’m genuinely happy to have the opportunity to work on it every day. When I catch these thoughts (like the ones mentioned in the quote) I quickly snap back to reality and remind myself that I am thankful for this moment in time and I am happy with everything I already have inside myself. I think about all of the things I do have – health, family, and awareness of my own spirit. I remember that I have a bigger purpose on this earth, and that the universe is taking care of me.

And that’s it! Before I know it, I’m not stressing what will take me to the next level of happiness, because I begin to feel it in my heart. I feel happy with where I am, in “the now.” Everyone is different and breaks down these walls in different ways; but this is my story. I only hope to inspire many of you, as much as many inspire me. Wishing you all eternal love, peace and happiness in oneself.

Wisdom of The Ancestors

“So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.

Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none.

When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.”

Spirit Junkie: The Miracle

“A miracle is a shift in perception. It’s the moment you chose to perceive your life with love. It’s the moment you chose to shift your mind and therefore change your experience. And when your experience changes, a miraculous outcome occurs. You can live a life beyond your wildest dreams.”

- Gabby Bernstein, Spirit Junkie

Escape.

You Are Lovely.

“The Awakening” by Sonny Carroll

A time comes in your life when you finally get it…
When in the midst of all your fears and insanity you
stop dead in your tracks and somewhere, the voice
inside your head cries out – ENOUGH!

Enough fighting and crying, or struggling to hold on. And, like a child quieting down after a blind tantrum, your sobs begin to subside, you shudder once or twice, you blink back your tears and through a mantle of wet lashes, you begin to look at the world through new eyes.

This is your awakening…

You realize that it’s time to stop hoping and waiting for something to change, or for happiness, safety and security to come galloping over the next horizon. You come to terms with the fact that he is not Prince Charming and you are not Cinderella and that in the real world, there aren’t always fairy tale endings (or beginnings for that matter) and that any guarantee of “happily ever after” must begin with you and in the process, a sense of serenity is born of acceptance.

You awaken to the fact that you are not perfect and that not everyone will always love, appreciate or approve of who or what you are … and that’s OK. (They are entitled to their own views and opinions.) And you learn the importance of loving and championing yourself and in the process, a sense of new found confidence is born of self-approval.

You stop complaining and blaming other people for the things they did to you (or didn’t do for you) and you learn that the only thing you can really count on is the unexpected. You learn that people don’t always say what they mean or mean what they say and that not everyone will always be there for you and that it’s not always about you. So, you learn to stand on your own and to take care of yourself and in the process, a sense of safety & security is born of self-reliance.

You stop judging and pointing fingers and you begin to accept people as they are and to overlook their shortcomings and human frailties and in the process, a sense of peace & contentment is born of forgiveness.

You realize that much of the way you view yourself and the world around you, is a result of all the messages and opinions that have been ingrained into your psyche. You begin to sift through all the junk you’ve been fed about how you should behave, how you should look and how much you should weigh, what you should wear and where you should shop and what you should drive, how and where you should live and what you should do for a living, who you should marry and what you should expect of a marriage, the importance of having and raising children or what you owe your parents. You learn to open up to new worlds and different points of view. You begin reassessing and redefining who you are and what you really stand for.

You learn the difference between wanting and needing and you begin to discard the doctrines and values you’ve outgrown, or should never have bought into to begin with and in the process, you learn to go with your instincts.

You learn that it is truly in giving that we receive and that there is power and glory in creating and contributing and you stop maneuvering through life merely as a “consumer” looking for your next fix.

You learn that principles such as honesty and integrity are not the outdated ideals of a by gone era, but the mortar that holds together the foundation upon which you must build a life.

You learn that you don’t know everything; it’s not your job to save the world and that you can’t teach a pig to sing. You learn to distinguish between guilt and responsibility and the importance of setting boundaries and learning to say NO. You learn that the only cross to bear is the one you choose to carry and that martyrs get burned at the stake.

Then you learn about love. Romantic love and familial love. How to love, how much to give in love, when to stop giving and when to walk away. You learn not to project your needs or your feelings onto a relationship. You learn that you will not be more beautiful, more intelligent, more lovable or important because of the man on your arm or the child that bears your name.

You learn to look at relationships as they really are and not as you would have them be. You stop trying to control people, situations and outcomes.

You learn that just as people grow and change, so it is with love; and you learn that you don’t have the right to demand love on your terms, just to make you happy.

You learn that alone does not mean lonely. You look in the mirror and come to terms with the fact that you will never be a size 5 or a perfect 10 and you stop trying to compete with the image inside your head and agonizing over how you “stack up.”

You also stop working so hard at putting your feelings aside, smoothing things over and ignoring your needs. You learn that feelings of entitlement are perfectly OK and that it is your right, to want things and to ask for the things that you want and that sometimes it is necessary to make demands.

You come to the realization that you deserve to be treated with love, kindness, sensitivity and respect and you won’t settle for less. You allow only the hands of a lover who cherishes you, to glorify you with his touch and in the process, you internalize the meaning of self-respect.

And you learn that your body really is your temple. And you begin to care for it and treat it with respect. You begin eating a balanced diet, drinking more water and taking more time to exercise. You learn that fatigue diminishes the spirit and can create doubt and fear. So you take more time to rest. Just as food fuels the body, laughter fuels our soul; so you take more time to laugh and to play.

You learn that for the most part in life, you get what you believe you deserve and that much of life truly is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

You learn that anything worth achieving is worth working for and that wishing for something to happen, is different from working toward making it happen.

More importantly, you learn that in order to achieve success you need direction, discipline and perseverance. You also learn that no one can do it all alone and that it’s OK to risk asking for help.

You learn that the only thing you must truly fear is the great robber baron of all time; FEAR itself. You learn to step right into and through your fears, because you know that whatever happens you can handle it and to give in to fear, is to give away the right to live life on your terms.

You learn to fight for your life and not to squander it living under a cloud of impending doom. You learn that life isn’t always fair, you don’t always get what you think you deserve and that sometimes bad things happen to unsuspecting, good people. On these occasions, you learn not to personalize things. You learn that God isn’t punishing you or failing to answer your prayers; it’s just life happening.

You learn to deal with evil in its most primal state; the ego. You learn that negative feelings such as anger, envy and resentment must be understood and redirected or they will suffocate the life out of you and poison the universe that surrounds you. You learn to admit when you are wrong and to build bridges instead of walls.

You learn to be thankful and to take comfort in many of the simple things we take for granted; things that millions of people upon the earth can only dream about; a full refrigerator, clean running water, a soft warm bed, a long hot shower. Slowly, you begin to take responsibility for yourself, by yourself and you make yourself a promise to never betray yourself and to never ever settle for less than your heart’s desire. You hang a wind chime outside your window so you can listen to the wind, and you make it a point to keep smiling, to keep trusting and to stay open to every wonderful possibility.

Finally, with courage in your heart and with God by your side you take a stand, you take a deep breath and you begin to design the life you want to live as best as you can.

The Great American Zoo Trip
by Joel Sartore

For many of Earth’s creatures time is running out. There are simply too many humans now, more than seven billion. All of us consume resources and space. Wildlife just can’t compete.

The concept behind the Biodiversity Project is simple: to show what’s at stake in terms of species loss and to get people to care while there’s still time.

In zoos, in private collections, and in the field with biologists around the world, I’m trying to photograph as many species as I can by using a portable studio with black and white backgrounds. I’ve been at this quite a while now and have captured nearly 1,800 in the past five years. That’s not nearly enough, but it’s a start. Starting tomorrow, I’ll be visiting several zoos over the next month, hoping to add at least 25 species to the project. The subjects will range from turtles to tigers and everything in between.

This black-and-white background technique gives all species equal weight and importance. A tiny beetle is as interesting as a lion, and a two-toed sloth as cuddly as a panda bear (see photos at left). The clean background, combined with nice light, allows the viewer to look every species in the eye, the window to the soul. I hope these portraits will connect with viewers and get them to understand that all creatures have at least a consciousness as well as a basic right to exist.

Experts say that half the world’s plant and animal species are now threatened with extinction. My job is to get you to look at them in a new way, to understand that all of this complexity and beauty has been shaped by millions of years of evolution. It would be a crime to doom even one of these species to extinction. It may also threaten our very existence. It is folly to think that we can doom everything else to extinction but that we’ll be just fine.

The time to do this is right now, while zoos still have a substantial “inventory.” Many animals simply don’t breed well in captivity, and so in the past we’ve been able to get replacements from the wild. For some species, we just can’t do that anymore. The captives are all that are left.

There’s no time to lose.

Toys For Tots, Help The Less Fortunate

What expresses love more than helping those in need? This year, take a little bit of time and a few dollars apart from your Christmas list to help less fortunate children smile this season. The feeling is rewarding and just all around amazing! Toys for Tots, created by the U.S Marine Corps Reserve, puts for their efforts to help these children all over the United States; now it’s your turn to get involved!

The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.

The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation enjoys one of the very best program to support ratios within the nonprofit world; 96:4. This means that over 96% of your donation goes to our mission of providing toys, books and other gifts to less fortunate children. The 4% spent on support principally covers fundraising expenses – not one donated dollar goes to pay for salaries or any other manpower costs.
